Choosing the Perfect Window Treatments for Your Home

Curtains, blinds, sheers, shutters? Double pleat, triple pleat, pelmet, trims? Velvet, linen, pattern or plain? The choices are endless, and we get it—it can feel overwhelming!

Window dressings play a vital role in interior design. They are not just functional elements but can make or break a space, influencing light, privacy, insulation, and ambience. The right choice can add colour, texture, and depth to a room, creating a refined and cohesive scheme.

At Studio 3 Creatives, we specialise in designing bespoke window treatments that enhance the architectural beauty of a space while meeting practical needs. Here’s a look at our approach through a recent luxury home renovation in Barnes, London.

1. The Drawing Room – Classic Elegance with Curtains and Roman Blinds

In this stunning 7,500 sqft period home, the drawing room was designed to make a lasting first impression. With high ceilings and grand bay windows, full-length curtains were the perfect choice to enhance the proportions of the space while reinforcing the home’s classic character.

We opted for double pleat, lined curtains with a bold geometric fabric to add a sophisticated statement. Instead of a traditional pelmet, a fabric-covered track (lath and fascia) provided a modern touch while maintaining a timeless aesthetic.

For the smaller window, roman blinds offered a sleek and structured alternative, balancing functionality and style.

Top Tip: Consider your home’s period and proportions when selecting window treatments. Curtains soften a space and add warmth, while roman blinds provide a tailored and contemporary look.

Trim: Carlyle Silk Satin Border in Cashew (Samuel & Sons)

2. Open-Plan Living – Dress Curtains for a Contemporary Touch

The owners extended their Victorian home to create a light-filled open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area with impressive ceiling heights and steel Crittall windows.

To complement the minimalist aesthetic, we selected dress curtains—a cost-effective solution that provides visual impact without full functionality. The lightweight, textured fabric allows natural light to filter through while softening the industrial elements of the space.

Top Tip: Dress curtains are a great way to introduce softness and warmth without overpowering a room’s modern aesthetic.

3. Attic Rooms – Functional Solutions for Arched Windows

The attic, transformed into three bedrooms, a playroom, and a bathroom, required a thoughtful approach to window dressings. The arched sash windows needed a solution that respected their architectural details while ensuring privacy and light control.

After careful measuring, we opted for three roman blinds per window with blackout lining and interlining for a restful night’s sleep. A fresh trim detail added a playful touch to suit the family-friendly space. Half shutters provided additional privacy and light diffusion.

Top Tip: For awkwardly shaped windows, consider layered treatments like roman blinds and shutters for both function and style.

Blinds: Melford (Sanderson)

Trim: Veranda Collection, Golden Rod Border (Samuel & Sons)
